על הקורס

Fungal infections, especially those caused by opportunistic species, have become substantially more common in recent decades and this should be a cause of concern for manufacturers of medicines for human use due to the clinical implications. Fungal contamination can also lead to loss of product due to spoilage. Some fungi may also resist sterilization. Moreover many fungal species are hard to kill even when using sporicidal agents.
In an assessment for fungal growth and contamination in a cleanroom, process, or product it is important to start with valid identification and characterization of the mold. There are very few mycologists who have the expertise in identification, as most mycologists are very specialized and their expertise may lie in certain areas of mycology or group of fungi. Moreover most mycologists work in academia, leaving very few mycologists who can help in valid identification in the pharmaceutical arena. Also most reference texts relate to medically important fungi, and though many fungi found in cleanrooms may be found in such reference texts, there is no one text that addresses easy to follow keys for identification.
The purpose of this course is to bridge this gap. Many QC microbiologists perform fungal identification using reference texts with images and color keys, making the error of comparing a sample to an image in the text. It is important to note that one stage of one fungus may look like another stage of another fungus leading to erroneous identification, and this mistake should be avoided. Loss of product due to fungal contamination and recalls due to fungal growth in product are one of the few commonly seen effects of not understanding fungi present in the cleanroom environment
